A huge sandcastle that rises from the sandy plains like a mirage from a bygone period, the Jaisalmer fort is a sight to behold. No location more conjures the mystery of the desert and unusual camel-train trading routes. The still-inhabited winding alleys of the fort are surrounded by ninety-nine bastions. There is a regal palace, stores covered in vibrant embroidery, and a plethora of establishments vying for your tourist dollars. It's difficult to avoid being fascinated by this desert castle, even with its commercialism. Jaisalmer is known as the Golden City because, beneath the ramparts, especially to the north, the old city's winding lanes contain exquisite havelis that are all carved from the same golden-honey sandstone as the fort. Jaisalmer is a city that has nearly recovered from its death in the last fifty years.
